Good to know
Special items are the most common reason for surprise airport fees. The pattern across airlines: items that are part of your allowance travel free, items above it need a pre-booked sports/special allowance, and buying at the airport almost always costs more than pre-booking. Use the baggage checker for your airline's standard allowance first, then add the special-item rule from this page.
Two habits save money on sports gear: weigh the packed bag, not the equipment (a golf bag with shoes and balls is often 3-4 kg heavier than the clubs alone), and book the sports allowance when you buy the ticket. Several airlines treat sports items as ordinary checked baggage when they fit your allowance, so a generous fare can make the equipment free — the per-airline rules above say which.
