Weight concept or piece concept?
Qantas mixes the weight concept and the piece concept depending on route and class: on most routes your allowance is a total weight, while on some long-haul routes it is counted in pieces. The table below shows what the official policy states for each fare.
In plain terms
Reading the table from the cheapest fare up: with Economy - Australian domestic you can check 1 piece, up to 23kg; with Economy - North/South America you can check 1 piece, up to 32kg; with Economy - rest of world you can check Up to 30kg total (weight concept); with Premium Economy - Australian domestic you can check 2 pieces, up to 23kg each; with Premium Economy - North/South America you can check 2 pieces, up to 32kg each. Anything beyond the line for your own fare is charged under the excess rules, so the fare you booked — not the one you nearly booked — is the one that decides what you pay at the desk.
